Rules for writing a letter and a sample letter

Below are some “do’s” and “don’ts” about writing letters to famous baseball players or any kind of celebrity. Also below are two sample letters; one is my typical letter to current baseball players and the other is my typical letter to a retired baseball player.

Do’s

You should always enclose a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope in the letter

Always be short and sweet, but don’t be rude

Thank them in advance

Do not be discouraged if you do not get anything back

Research the player a little bit

Be polite

Don’ts

Say anything bad about them in the letter

Be rude

Forget to put a stamp on the SASE

Send them powder sugar for their egos

Send more than 2 cards to a current major-leaguer or retired major-leaguer

Send more than 3 cards to a minor-leaguer

Keep writing more letters to them

Take advantage of them being nice and signing stuff for you

Write a ten-page story

My sample, hand-written letter to current baseball players

Dear Paul Konerko,

I am a really big fan of yours. I have followed your whole career, from your beginning with the Dodgers, and then you move to Cincy and finally your current stardom in Chicago. I like how you always try your hardest, no matter what the circumstances.

I would greatly appreciate it if you’d please sign two of the enclosed baseball cards. You may keep the 2003 Topps Opening Day card as a little present to you for contributing so much to baseball. A SASE is also enclosed to ensure a safe return.

                                                                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                                                                        Simon, age 12.

Here is my typical hand-written letter to a former major leaguer

March 2nd, 2005

Dear Brooks Robinson,

I am a huge fan of yours. Although I never had the chance to see you play, based upon your fabulous statistics and that you’re one of the few elite players in the Hall of Fame, I can come to the conclusion that you were a most excellent player, and just as fine a gentleman.

I would so greatly appreciate it if you’d please sign the two enclosed baseball cards, for my personal collection. A questionnaire is also enclosed, and although I’d be extremely grateful and thrilled if you answered (some) of it, I also totally understand if time does not permit you to. Finally, a SASE is also enclosed, to ensure a safe return. Thank-you so much, and I wish you many, many more years of continued health and happiness.

                                                                                                                        Very sincerely yours,

                                                                                                                        (my signature here)

                                                                                                                        Simon Thompson, age 13

                                                                                                                        Portland, Maine
