Sea Dogs except for Ron Johnson who’s their manager and Bob Kipper who’s their
pitching coach.
At the 8-19-04 PSD home game I
added the following autographs to the logo baseball, they are all in thick
black sharpie and are PSD players (unless otherwise noted): Colin Young, Mike O’Keefe with “11” signed next to his name,

2004
Here is a list of every player
that I obtained (an) autograph(s) from on the 2004 Portland Sea Dogs, with a
brief sentence (or two) about their signing habits and attitude.
Starting Pitchers
Abe Alvarez, P- One of three regular players on the 2004 Sea Dogs who had
spent time with the Red Sox (pitched five innings in 2004). Abe always signed
with a smile, and was a really great guy, and I wish all the best to him for
the future.
Ryan Cameron, P- Good guy who would always smile when signing. He would sign
almost all of the time, and sometimes made conversation with fans.
Marc Deschenes,
P- One of the other excellent signers on the team, Marc
would never walk past or refuse to sign for fans, even after the games when all
of the players go home he’d always stay and sign for every last fan.
Bo Donaldson, P- Semi-tough autograph, but Bo definitely had a great attitude.
Bo would sign for me about seventy-five percent of the times I asked and when
he did he always smiled.
D. Ehrlich, P- Ehrlich pitched for the Sea Dogs for a couple games in 2004.
I believe that he was drafted the same year and, what I saw of him up in
Kason Gabbard, P- Kason is a good
signer. He doesn’t sign every time, but the majority of the time someone asks
him for his autograph he’ll pick up the pen. He does have a very sloppy
signature though.
Jerome Gamble, P- Jerome was listed on the 2004 Boston Red Sox 40-Man Roster,
but quickly faded away. He usually signed, but wasn’t the easiest signature to
get on the Sea Dogs by any standards. He had a nice signature though, signing
“J. Gamble” very neatly.
Eric Glaser, P- I feel like I’m being a bit repetitive, but Eric was another
very great signer on the club. He’d almost always pick up the pen and sign as
many for you as you wanted. Sometimes talked a bit too, and often smiled.
Tim Hamulack,
P- Fair signer. Would sign most of the time fans asked
him but walked past a few times. When he did sign though, he produced probably
the sloppiest signature on the entire 2004 team. He also likes to be called
“Hammy” (John Nathans told me).
Bryan Hebson,
P- The last regular player on the ’04 Sea Dogs who spent
time in the majors (he pitched part of an inning for
Jason Howell, P- Great guy who is good friends with equally as awesome signer,
John Nathans. Howell, while he was with the Dogs,
would almost always pick up the pen, smile, and chat with fans.
James Johnson, P- If James had a personal slogan it would be “Not a star, not a
signer.” James very rarely picked up the pen and when he did he didn’t seem
very happy about it. The only bright part about his signing is that he took
time signing his name, signing the full thing in cursive.
Ryan Larson, P- Semi-tough signer. Larson would sign most of the time, but
occasionally would just walk past the fans asking him for his autograph.
Greg Montalbano,
P- Great signer. First game he had in
Joe Nelson, P- Joe is one of the three players on the ’04 Dogs who has spent time in the majors. Joe sometimes signed, and he
was a good guy for the times that he signed.
Juan Perez, P- Definitely not the star of the team by any standards, but you
could always count on Juan to pick up the pen and sign for everyone waiting.
Always signed with a smile, but seldom said any words (I don’t think he knows
English too well).
Chris Smith, P- Okay signer. Didn’t sign every occasion
that I asked, and didn’t have that great an attitude. Not the best
signer on the club.
Joshua Stevens, P- One of the better pitchers on the team, you could almost
always count on Josh to pick up the pen and sign. Great guy.
Colin Young, P- Pretty good signer, but needed to work on his attitude and
smiling. Colin would seldom smile and you could easily tell that he did not
enjoy signing.
Charlie Zink, P- Charlie played just during April, so I didn’t have the ability
to get his autograph. So far in 2005 though he has proved to
be a very nice guy, and a really great signer.
Position Players
Jeff Bailey, C- Great guy with a Hall of Fame attitude. Probably the best
attitude on the ’04 Dogs, you could always count on Bailey to pick up the pen
and sign. He made friends very quickly on the club, and has a very nice
signature. He was definitely one of the Most Valuable Signers on the club.
Stefan Bailie,
IF- The BEST signer and NICEST guy on the team. Stefan
would always stop to sign, and always chatted, smiled, and was very
friendly. By far the nicest player on the team and just a
really great down-to-earth guy.
Mike Campo, OF- Mike didn’t play with the Sea Dogs for too long, but during
the time he did, he signed for me on almost every occasion. Great
guy with a good attitude.
Clint Chauncey, C- The least known player on the team signed almost all the
time. Great guy and smiled a lot. One of the most valuable
signers on the 2004 squad.
Alberto Concepcion,
Jr., C- Alberto only played for a week with the Sea Dogs but
during that time he’d always pick up the pen and sign. Also is a really nice
guy.
Sheldon Fulse,
OF- Like Gamble, Fulse was a hot
prospect going into 2004, but quickly slipped away. Sheldon signed on and off
for the ’04 season, often refusing to sign multiples and index cards though. He
signed very quickly and once asked me why I wanted his autograph so many times.
Not a very nice guy at all.
John Hattig,
IF- Poor signer. Only once signed for my during his time
with
Eric
Johnson, OF- Good guy. Eric didn’t spend too much time with the Dogs, but the time
he did spend he’d almost always sign and even talk some with fans.
Dustin Kelly, 2B- Dustin was called up from the rookie league for just one Sea
Dogs game in 2004. That game he signed one item for me, all I had, and seemed
very nice.
Joe Kilburg,
IF- Pretty good signer, but did not like being asked for
an autograph while he was talking with someone. I got his autograph almost all
of the times I asked, and he always smiled.
Mike Lockwood, OF- Mike’s a really nice guy, and a really great player. Mike was
invited to the Red Sox spring training camp in 2005, and you could almost
always count on him to pick up the pen and sign. Occasionally he’d have
conversations with fans and at the last game of the 2004 season he thanked me
for going to so many games that year.
Mike Lopez-Cao,
C- Great signer who has been known to wait around after
games and sign for every fan. He was always very talkative and smiled a whole
lot.
Edgar Martinez, C- No, not the
Sean McGowan, OF- Not a very nice guy. Only once did he sign for me, and when
he did he failed to smile or make conversation. He was released by the Red Sox
in the summer of 2004.
Jesus Medrano, IF- Another poor signer. Only once signed for me before he was
promoted to AAA (although he did sign for me through-the-mail), but had a nice
signature.
John Nathans,
C- Awesome guy! Would always sign, even when he
wasn’t asked. He would talk a lot with the fans and always smiled. You could
tell that John was savoring his time in professional baseball.
Raul Nieves, IF- A total idiot. I would use worse words but kids visit this
site. Raul hardly ever signed, and was always very curt and hardly ever smiled.
Not a very nice guy, AT ALL.
Mike O’Keefe, IF- Not a very nice guy and not a very good signer. Mike would
seldom sign and when he did you could tell that he’d rather be elsewhere. He
does have a wicked signature though.
Kenny Perez, 2B- Not a very good signer or nice guy. Kenny would almost
always walk past the fans asking for his autograph, and the few times he did
stop to sign he never smiled and produced a very sloppy signature.
Hanley
Ramirez, SS- By far the most known player
on the team. That also makes him the most
wanted autograph. Most collectors don’t understand Hanley’s signing habits, as
some days he’ll sign willingly for all fans, and other days he’ll walk right
past. 2004 he was a fairly good signer but so far this year in 2005 he has only
signed about a quarter of the times people have asked him.
Brett Roneberg,
OF- Fair signer. Brett, the star of the team (he won the
2004 Portland Sea Dogs MVP award), would often sign, but was sometimes curt and
didn’t smile. Still a nice guy though.
Gary Schneidmiller,
IF- Good guy, but unfortunately I didn’t even know who he
was until the last game (only played September with
Coaching Staff
Ron Johnson, Manager- Awesome guy who usually talked with fans and almost always
smiled. Johnson had a great attitude and would almost always sign for any fans
waiting.
Bob Kipper, Pitching Coach- Great guy, who obviously was glad that he was back in
baseball. Bob pitched many seasons in the 1980s and 90s and he would always
sign as many items as you had at Dogs games.
Russ Morman,
Hitting Coach- The Sea Dogs must have had one
of the nicest coaching staffs in the 2004 Eastern League, as Morman was (along with Johnson and Kipper) an excellent
signer. He would always sign if time permitted him to.
Lee Slagle, Trainer- Although not many people wanted his autograph, I got it a
few times and after him asking me why I wanted his autograph, he’d sign
willingly and produce a nice signature.
Jeremy Dorrough,
Assistant Trainer- Dorrough signed every item I had for him, and why shouldn’t he? I’m
probably only one of a select very few who have asked for his autographJ!
Anyways, he was a very nice guy when I did get his autograph.
Players on Rehab
Pedro Astacio,
P- Played one rehab game with the Sea Dogs in 2004. After
he pitched five innings he signed for anyone waiting. I got him to sign one
item but he would have signed more if I had more. He seemed like a nice enough guy, especially considering he’s a 15 or so year major
league veteran.
Leonard DiNardo,
P- Really cool guy who played two weeks for the Sea Dogs
on rehab. DiNardo has played a few years in the
majors for the Mets and Red Sox, and signed all the items I had for him on
numerous occasions.
Phil Seibel, P- For the few games that he played with the Sea Dogs on rehab
(he’s pitched in the majors before), Phil signed every item I asked him to and
seemed very nice.
At a signing
Gabe Kapler- I met Gabe Kapler, outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, at the
Portland Public Market on
Paul Sizer- I met Paul Sizer, who draws, writes, and does everything
else for the comic Little White Mouse which he created. Little White Mouse is a
manga comic book about a girl who is stranded in outer space and goes on lots
of cool adventures. I met him at a lecture that he gave the students who signed
up for it about manga comics, his comic and other comic books and comic
television shows. It was a one hour, twenty minute lecture and at the end he
answered questions and signed things. I actually was the only one who had him
sign something since no one else would probably want a comic book writer’s
autograph, or at least not know that he is famous enough to be
autograph-worthy! I got him to sign a 5 ½” x 8 ½” slip of green paper that had
an advertisement for his comic book on it. He signed it in thick, orange
sharpie which might I add is his favorite color and next to his signature he
wrote “Little White Mouse” (the name of his comic) in Japanese characters. Mr.
Sizer is a really nice guy, and is also a very good cartoonist. Since our
library is having famous cartoonists coming for workshops/lectures, more people
will be coming through out the week, and I’m more than likely to get a couple
more autographs, I’ll keep you posted!
Jane Irwin- I met Jane Irwin, who created/draws/writes and does
everything else for the comic book Vogelein. Vogelein is a comic book about an
artificial fairy that humans made and a real fairy from the woods that is very
old and has been around for a long, long, time. I met her at a lecture she gave
the students who signed up for it about how to write a comic, mini comics, her
comic, the history of comics and other cool facts. It was a fifty-five minute
lecture and at the end she answered questions and signed items. My friends came
to this lecture so I was not alone asking her for her autograph. About five
other kids did too. I got her to sign her 1 ½” x 3” business card in thin black
ink pen. On the front it gives her email address, website and where she lives
and on the back I put a small sticker that she gave each one of us of the front
of her comic book. Ms. Irwin is a really nice lady and had a pretty good
lecture just like Mr. Sizer. I’ve got one more cartoonist autograph to get so
keep coming back!
Brad Leighton- I met Brad Leighton, who is a two time Busch North Series
Champion, outside of the Portland Sea Dogs’ stadium, Hadlock Field. He was
giving away signed 8 ½” x 14” photos with information about him on them. He
signed it in thick black sharpie.
Johnny Pesky- I met Johnny Pesky at a Portland Sea Dogs home game, played
at Hadlock Field in
Phillip M. Hoose- I met Phillip M. Hoose, who has written four books,
including his most recent, The Race to Save the Lord God Bird. The
Race to Save the Lord God Bird is about the ivory-billed woodpecker bird
that went extinct twenty years ago. It was famous for its unique call, and how
rare it was. Mr. Hoose, who is a local author, gave a talk at our school about
that book, and the talk was really great. Before he gave the talk I got his
autograph on a 2 ½” x 5 ½” card that I made of him. Its really hard to explain
what the card looks like, so you can look at a photo of it in the Archival
Photos Page.
Mike Bordick- I met Mike Bordick at the
